I actually grew up on drumsticks. AKA chicken legs. At least 1-2x a week my mom cooked a drumstick recipe from her collection for our family of five. Many times I remember grabbing a couple on my way to track practice or volleyball practice. I never actually watched my mom make her drumsticks recipe, but they were always good. Always savory and always full of flavor.

Drumsticks are a Money Saver

Drumsticks are the most economically friendly cut of meat! This past week at my local grocery store you could get about 14 chicken legs for $5. With a family of five and two HUGE teen boys wanting seconds, sometimes thirds this dinner makes sense to me! So feel free to double or triple this recipe to fee the masses and have plenty for leftovers.

Not only that it’s easy to get in the oven. No matter if you’re coming home from work after a long day or getting started on dinner in the morning, you can mix and pop this in the oven in no time.

Step by Step Cooking Instructions (With Pictures)

1. Preparing the Drumsticks

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (190°C) to ensure it’s hot and ready by the time you’re done with the preparation.
  • Rinse and pat dry your drumsticks. This helps the skin get crispier!

2. Butter Mixture for Flavor

  • In a small microwavable bowl, melt 1 stick of salted butter in the microwave. Kerrygold butter is my absolute favorite for this recipe.
  • Once melted, add 2 tablespoons of minced garlic to the butter.
  • Stir in the zest of 1 lemon and 2 packets of Sazon. Mix well until the ingredients are fully integrated.

3. Seasoning the Drumsticks Two Ways

  • Place the drumsticks in a large bowl OR on a baking sheet. Just make sure the chicken is fully defrosted or the butter will solidify.
  • Pour the butter mixture over the drumsticks. Ensure each drumstick is well-coated by using a brush or your hands (wearing gloves can make this less messy).
  • Sprinkle finely chopped cilantro over the drumsticks, reserving some for garnish after cooking.

4. Baking

  • Arrange the drumsticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Make sure they’re not touching each other to ensure even cooking.
  • Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the drumsticks are golden brown and the juices run clear. An internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) indicates they’re done.

5. Serving

  • Let the drumsticks rest for a few minutes out of the oven. This helps redistribute the juices.
  • Roll the drumstick in the juice for more flavor!
  • Garnish with the reserved cilantro and perhaps a squeeze of fresh lemon juice for an extra zesty kick.

6. Enjoy!

  • Serve with rice, vegetables, or a fresh salad!
