If there’s one word that perfectly captures the last five years, it’s aesthetic. I might not know the textbook definition, but I know it when I see it—and it’s beautiful. To me, aesthetic is about intentionality. It’s the thought and care that go into presenting something, whether it’s your home, your style, or even your entire way of life. Take Ralph Lauren, for example. His aesthetic is unmistakable. It’s timeless, cohesive, and effortlessly elegant. The colors, textures, and patterns all work together to create something instantly recognizable.

So when it comes to hosting we can take that same idea and use it so that when we you decide to gather, you have a set up that that not only feels welcoming but also looks effortlessly beautiful. We already know that hosting isn’t about just food and drinks. It’s about creating an experience and my hunch is that you have that gift!

Basic hosting is something we all will need to do in someway or another, but some (like you) have the ability and the heart to take it a step further and make their guests feel cherished. You can use these principles no matter if you’re planning an intimate dinner party, a cozy brunch, or a festive celebration, these aesthetic hosting ideas are going to be a great addition.

I love to entertain outside so this will be the basis of my example but again you can use this no matter where you decide to host.

1. Set the Scene for your Aesthetic

Consider your backdrop. Our backyard is filled with lush greenery, white roses, and mature trees—this natural setting sets the tone for our design choices.

Pull colors from your surroundings. Look at the hues your space naturally provides and use them to guide your decor selections.

For our backyard, navy blue is the perfect choice.

  • It stands out beautifully against the greenery.
  • It complements the neutral tones of gray, white, and wood.
  • It adds depth while still feeling timeless and sophisticated.

By being intentional with color and design, your entertaining space will always feel harmonious and well put together.

2. Curate a Beautiful Tablescape

Layering is the secret to a beautiful tablescape. It instantly adds depth and interest!

Decide whether to use a tablecloth.

  • I chose to leave the table bare to showcase the beautiful gray wood.
  • If using a tablecloth, consider one that complements your space and color scheme. White keeps things clean while a pattern or color gives it the table so much more to look at. I love a full table with different textures and finishes!

Build layers with tableware.

  • Start with a charger for a solid base.
  • Add two different plate sizes and patterns for dimension.
  • Use a coordinating cloth napkin for a polished look.
  • Use silverware if available. I like to have a few good silver and one gold set.
  • Incorporate fresh foliage (like ficus leaves) to tie everything together naturally.

Layering also makes it easier to add finishing touches. Once the foundation is set, you can easily incorporate a centerpiece, candles, or seasonal elements.

Symmetry creates balance, but asymmetry can add interest!

  • I typically go for a symmetrical look, but an asymmetrical setup can work if the space allows.

Stick to 2-3 consistent colors for a cohesive aesthetic.

3. Signature Drinks & Thoughtful Beverages

  • Create a signature cocktail (or mocktail) that reflects the theme of your gathering.
  • Serve drinks in elegant glassware—clear goblets, coupe glasses, or ceramic cups can all add charm.
  • Offer a variety of beverages, including herbal teas, infused waters, or punch.
  • Display it off to the side where guest can easily help themselves and make their own creation.

4. Elevated and Effortless Food Presentation

  • Use wooden boards, marble trays, or tiered stands to display appetizers and desserts beautifully.
  • Arrange fruits, cheeses, and crackers in an artistic way—think abundance and variety and you really can’t mess up.
  • Garnish dishes with fresh herbs or edible flowers for an extra touch of beauty. This simple chicken dish is elevated with bay leaves from our backyard and lemons from our tree. Super simple recipe but now looks so special!

5. Create a Cozy Atmosphere

Lighting, music and smell aka sight, sound and scent really make a difference. It’s these touches that people dont notice but miss when it’s not there. Outside when the sun goes down we have our string lights on a timer so we don’t miss a beat. I also make sure to set out candles and have a playlist going in the background before any guests arrive.

  • Set the mood with a curated playlist— acoustic covers, or classical music can enhance the ambiance. Depending on the crowd is just might be a 90’s playlist!
  • Add comfortable seating with plush cushions and cozy throws.
  • Light a few scented candles with subtle, welcoming fragrances like vanilla, citrus, or fresh linen.

6. Personalized Touches for Guests

This is when you can show some personality and really go the extra mile. My love language for my friends is offering a blanket. Maybe it’s just an excuse to keep collecting them but I truly feel like it makes them feel at home!

  • You can handwritten place cards or small favors (like mini candles or homemade treats) that adds a thoughtful detail.
  • Provide cozy blankets if you’re hosting outdoors in cooler weather.
  • Share a warm welcome by greeting guests personally and making them feel at home.

7. Encourage Meaningful Conversation

Over the years, I’ve noticed a few things that make a difference when it comes to this!

Seating arrangements set the tone.

  • Starting at the table is great, but moving to a more relaxed setting—like the fireplace or a cozy chair circle—encourages deeper conversations.

  • Arranging seating in a way that feels intimate helps everyone feel more engaged.

Smaller gatherings create stronger connections.

  • We usually invite friends alone or with just one other close family.

  • Keeping the group small allows for more meaningful and personal conversations.

Hosting with aesthetic intention doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. The key is in the details—thoughtful decor, beautiful table settings, delicious food, and warm hospitality. With these ideas, your gatherings will not only be visually stunning but also full of heart and connection.

So light the candles, pour the drinks, and get ready to host your friends with some confidence and beauty!
